Rick Santorum managed to say something about gays that wasn’t totally homophobic
Presidential wannabe Rick Santorum managed to say something about gay people that wasn’t completely ignorant or homophobic.
Santorum is one of the most notoriously anti-gay of the Republican Presidential wannabes, claiming repeatedly that homosexuality is a condition that can be cured.
The Republican has also claimed that same-sex couples getting married in the US will “disrupt the foundation of the world”, and has pledged to void the marriages of thousands of loving gay couples if elected President.
However, the US Senator shocked people today – by saying something about gay people that didn’t make him sound like a frothy-mouthed homophobe.
He was being challenged on The View by out co-host Raven-Symoné.
She asked: “I don’t understand why you feel like people in the gay and transgender community can’t raise a very beautiful, smart, intelligent child as well as a man and a woman – when sometimes, coming from a heterosexual family, there’s a lot more fighting, there’s a lot more going on! I don’t feel why you feel like that community can’t provide for a child just as well as a straight couple ”
However, shockingly Santorum managed to go nearly an entire sentence discussing gay people without saying something homophobic.
He said: “I’m not saying that a same-sex couple can’t have a very positive and nurturing environment.”
However, to paraphrase a saying, you can’t polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter – and Santorum frothed his way back to his usual self soon enough.
He ranted just seconds later: “The natural mother and natural father of that child is what historically and I think sociologically you look at today, it is in the best interest of that child to be raised by their natural mother and natural father and that’s really what we want to encourage.”
He continued to rally against same-sex marriage, saying: “When you have a law that says, as the [Supreme Court] said, that marriage has nothing to do with children anymore, then what you’re going to have, is you’re not going to a society encouraging the behaviour that is in the best interest of children and the future of society.”
