Demi Lovato on sexuality: Rumours are rumours, but love is fluid
Demi Lovato has spoken about her sexuality, insisting that “love is fluid”.
The 23-year-old singer songwriter has been coy about her sexuality, recently telling Alan Carr that she is “not confirming or denying” that one of her songs is about sex with a woman.
The former Disney star opened up in Complex magazine about rumours she is dating genderfluid Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose.
She said: “Rumours are rumours, and people are going to spread them. You can believe what you want, but no, I was not in a relationship with her.
“By the way, love is fluid. Whether there’s been rumours with one specific person or not, that’s all that matters.
“Humans are humans, and when you connect with somebody on a spiritual level it doesn’t matter.”
The singer added that she has been in an “off and on” relationship with a man for five years.
Alan Carr challenged her earlier this month about the lyrics to song Cool For The Summer.
The song includes a number of suggestive lyrics, including: “Got a taste for the cherry/I just need to take a bite”, and “I’m a little curious, too / tell me if it’s wrong, if it’s right / I don’t care /I can keep a secret, can you?”
Carr asked: “I put it to you, Miss Lovato, that that song is about lesbianism! Can you confirm or deny this accusation?”
She responded: “I’m not confirming, and I’m definitely not denying” – before adding: “All of my songs are based off of personal experiences. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimentation at all.”
Carr, who is openly gay, joked: “The trouble is I experimented once and it stuck.”
The singer enigmatically replied: “Hey, I didn’t say it didn’t stick either!”
She would not be the first singer in recent months to open up about her sexuality through a song – former child star Miley Cyrus recently confirmed that she is pansexual – and released a free song that includes graphic details of her sexual encounters with women.
