Lena Dunham won’t marry yet because it won’t be as good as all the gay weddings
Girls star Lena Dunham has joked that she doesn’t want to get married yet – because gay people are “winning at weddings right now” and she can’t compete.
Dunham was one America’s most vocal activists in support of legalising same-sex marriage in the States, promising to boycott marriage until every human was given the right.
Same-sex marriage became legal across all 50 US states in June this year, when the Supreme Court ruled that equality is a constitutional right.
However, despite the fact that equality has come to all 50 states, Dunham says she still might not tie the knot with boyfriend Jack Antonoff.
Speaking on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, she said: ”I feel intimidated because, I don’t want to espouse any stereotypes, but gay people are kind of killing it at weddings right now, they’re kind of winning at weddings.
“So I don’t want to go in and kind of pale in comparison.”
She added of the ruling: “We were thrilled, we were celebrating. And then suddenly the texts just started coming from our friends, from our mothers, from our exercise instructors.
“Being like finally ‘it’s your time!’… and we kind of looked at each other we were like, ‘Oh God what have we done?’.
“We own a dog together. We own a home together, but the marriage thing is a big deal.”
She wrote previously of her pledge: “The fact is that wanting everyone to have the right to marry and wanting to be married are two very different things. I am not foolish enough to think I have made a final decision about marriage,
“I am not foolish enough to think I have made a final decision about marriage.
“But it turns out that what I was waiting for was not the chance to marry but the chance to think about marriage on an even playing field, in a world where its relevance is a little harder to question and its essence a little harder to reject.
“I have the professional luxury of wearing at least three fluffy dresses a year. One of them could be white if I wanted it to be.”
