Out author Patrick Ness to create new Doctor Who spin-off TV series
Doctor Who is getting a new official spin-off series, created by out author Patrick Ness.
The long-running BBC sci-fi show has had a number of spin-offs over the years, from the adult-themed Torchwood to the flop 80s series K9 and Company.
However, the BBC this week announced a fresh TV series set within the Whoniverse, from young adult author Patrick Ness.
The new eight-episode series ‘Class’ will air on BBC Three, and is set in London’s fictional Coal Hill School – where classic Doctor Who companions Ian and Barbara worked, as does current companion Clara (Jenna Coleman).
The show will feature the teens of the school banding together to fight alien threats.
Out author Patrick Ness, who is making his first foray into television with the series, said: “I’m astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself.
“There’s so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy.
“I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels.”
Mr Ness has previously spoken about the need for diversity in storytelling, saying last year: “As a gay kid, I had NO SINGLE BOOK that told me I wasn’t alone. Never again. Not if I’ve got anything to do with it.”
Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat added: “No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we’re bringing his brilliant story-telling into Doctor Who. This is growing up in modern Britain – but with monsters!”
BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh added: “We’re excited to give Patrick Ness this opportunity to work with us at BBC Three and the Doctor Who family.
“Patrick understands young audiences and I’m delighted he will use his incredible skills as a storyteller to delight audiences on BBC Three. BBC Three will always innovate and offer opportunities for brilliant new talent.”
Though it is set in London, the series will film in and around Wales from Spring 2016 – and is set to air later in 2016.
