Clean Bandit star hits out at fans who say they want to ‘rape’ him
Clean Bandit’s Neil Amin-Smith has hit back at some of the unwanted attention his has received of late.
As one half of British pop’s most popular gay power couple, the violinist and boyfriend Olly Alexander have won legions of adoring fans.
However, he recently took to Twitter to hit out at people who express their adoration in a decidedly sinister fashion – by saying they want to “rape” him.
The pop star said using the term as a “compliment” – an increasing trend on social media – was “gross” and “f*cked up”.
Disgusted by the barrage of violent comments he has received, he tweeted: “there is not aNYthing flattering, cute or attractive in being told by someone that they want to rape you. it’s gross and fucked up.”
Amin-Smith’s boyfriend – Years and Years frontman Olly Alexander – also recently spoke out the reaction to his relationship the with Clean Bandit star.
The singer said, although flattered by the reaction they’ve received, he worries being a “gay couple in the media” will “f**k up the real thing”.
He said: “I found someone that I love and that’s a new thing and that has its own world.
“And then it exists in this world where we’re both conscious about being open about it.
“The response has been incredibly touching and heartwarming and overwhelming, but I feel like if you invest too much of yourself in the construction of yourself as a gay couple in the media you end up f***ing up the real thing, so I try not to think too much about it.”
Last month, the pair shared a kiss in front of delighted fans during a performance at a festival.
After their bands performed back to back Jersey Live festival, Olly Alexander took to the crowd to cheer on his boyfriend’s hit band.
He was then helped on stage by Amin-Smith, before the pair shared a smooch in front of 5,000 delighted fans and closed the set together.
