Hillary Clinton joked about Robert Mugabe’s homophobia, and he’s not happy
Zimbabwe has claimed that Hillary Clinton is ‘too junior’ to criticise the country’s anti-gay President Robert Mugabe.
Mugabe is one of the world’s most notoriously homophobic leaders, and gave a bizarre speech to the United Nations in which he ranted about gay rights before shouting “we are not gays!”
Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton later joked about the plain weird speech, saying: “I’m guessing the LGBT activists in prison in Zimbabwe would disagree with [Mugabe] if ever given a chance to have a platform.”
However, Mugabe’s spokesperson George Charamba has now attacked Clinton – claiming that she has no right to criticise Mugabe because he was speaking as African Union chair.
According to the state-owned Herald newspaper he said: “The President relates to sitting heads of state, not aspiring candidates which Clinton is. The President was not just speaking as head of state for Zimbabwe.
“He was speaking as the African Union chair which puts him above what Clinton can ever hope to be.”
He continued: “[One] can only surmise that she is feeling the heat from contestation both from within her party and from the Republicans which is why [she is] arikurotomoka [hallucinating].”
Clinton last week affirmed her commitment to the LGBT community and said she would fight for LGBT rights if she became President, and recently mocked herself for not supporting LGBT rights sooner.
Mugabe has previously has said homosexuality is a filthy disease, claimed he ‘pities’ the Queen because of Britain’s “gay habits”, and said Zimbabwe would “never, never, never” support homosexuality.
