Author Stephanie Meyer revealed the bookā€™s characters would swap genders in new bonus content.

In the new anniversary material ā€“ ā€˜Life and Death: Twilight Reimaginedā€™ ā€“ the gender roles of the seriesā€™ main characters are reversed ā€“ meaning Edward will be Edythe and Jacob will be Julie.

ā€œI wanted to do something fun for the 10th anniversary and the publisher wanted like a foreword and I thought, ā€˜Well, maybe something more interesting,’ā€ Meyer revealed yesterday (October 6).

The new storyā€™s protagonist is named Beau ā€“ the male equivalent of Twilight heroine Bella Swan ā€“ played by Kristen Stewart in the equally successful movie franchise.

Meyer said that her inspiration for the gender swap came from the character of Bella ā€“ as she hoped to quash criticisms of the character, who has been labelled by some readers as nothing more than a ā€œdamsel in distressā€.

ā€œItā€™s always bothered me a little bit because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be in distress. We donā€™t have the powers,ā€ Meyer said.

ā€œI thought, ā€˜What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does,ā€™ and, you know, itā€™s about the same.ā€

ā€œThe further you get in, the more it changes because the personalities get a little bit different, but it starts out very similar and really, it really is the same story because itā€™s just a love story and it doesnā€™t matter whoā€™s the boy and whoā€™s the girl, it still works out,ā€ she added.

Highlighting the major differences between Beau and Bella, Meyer said the new character is ā€œnot as angryā€ as his female counterpart.

ā€œHeā€™s more OCD, heā€™s not nearly so flowery with his words and thoughts, and heā€™s not as angry ā€“ heā€™s totally missing the chip Bella carries around on her shoulder all the time.ā€

However, although Meyerā€™s original novel inspired sequels and five blockbuster movies, the author says she believes this will be the outing for Beau.

ā€œI think that this is just one version with Beau,ā€ she said.

Earlier this year, Stewart opened up about her sexuality, after extensive tabloid rumours.

She said: ā€œGoogle me, Iā€™m not hiding.ā€

ā€œI donā€™t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ā€˜Iā€™m coming out!ā€™ No, I do a job. Until I decide that Iā€™m starting a foundation or that I have some perspective or opinion that other people should be receivingā€¦ I donā€™t.

ā€œIā€™m just a kid making movies.ā€
