Ben Carson says same-sex marriage will destroy ‘tradition of family’
The Republican Presidential hopeful has attacked marriage equality once again.
Ben Carson – who described himself as a very “reasonable and tolerant person” – says that he believes the legalisation of same-sex marriage could “destroy” the sanctity of marriage and goes against the “word of God”.
He also said that marriage equality would lead to “other groups” wanting to get married – including those who wish to be married to more that one person.
“If you change the definition of marriage for one group what defence do you have for the next group that comes along and wants it changed?” he said.
“Can you say, ‘no we’re just changing it this one time and it will this way for forever.’ Well, how is that fair? I mean, it doesn’t make any sense.”
He went on to say that allowing same-sex marriage would open up the debate on the idea that marriage has to be between two people.
“That’s the natural next question and on it goes from there.”
Carson added that allowing same-sex marriage would change the “word of God” on other things besides marriage – such as destroying the current “tradition of family”.
“Effectively what it does is it takes away from the tradition of family that we’ve known for thousands of years but also it negates an important part of the word of God,” said Carson.
“If you can do that with one part of the word of God you can do with the rest of it too. Toss the whole thing in the garbage.”
However, he was quick to point out that his comments were in no way homophobic.
“I have nothing against gay people whatsoever,” he said – however, some people may find that a little hard to believe.
Dr Carson has previously espoused a belief that same-sex marriage is a Marxist plot – as well as claiming that he doesn’t believe gay rights are civil rights.
Carson also said earlier this year that prisons prove being gay is “absolutely” a choice, and has compared homosexuality to bestiality and paedophilia.
