Argentinian trans activist murdered in her home
Argentinian transgender activist Diana Sacayán has been found dead in her Buenos Aires home.
Her body was discovered yesterday (October 13) and appeared to suffer multiple stab wounds, according to a source speaking to the Buenos Aires Herald.
Miss Sacayán’s death is being treated as murder by Buenos Aires police.
Miss Sacayán was well respected in her home country for her work with LGBT rights group Movimento Antidiscriminatorio de Liberación and role as an alternate representative of the Trans Secretariat on the Board of ILGA (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association).
In 2012 she was one of the first transgender citizens to change their legal gender without having to seek approval from healthcare professionals and was issued legal papers from Argentina’s president Cristina Kirchner.
Police are said to be looking for two suspects, who may have been known Miss Sacayán. The building superintendent told police that her front door had been broken from the inside, suggesting that Miss Sacayán let her killers inside.
Her death continues the trend of murdered trans women in South America – where 1,356 trans people have been murdered since 2008 according to the Trans Murder Monitoring Project.
