Sam Smith smashes two world records
The singer has broken not just one, but two world records.
The star’s Bond theme song, ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ – the video for which was released last week – is the first in the franchise’s 50-year history to reach number one in the UK – as well as his fifth chart-topper overall.
In addition, his début album, In The Lonely Hour, has remained in the UK top ten for 69 consecutive weeks – the longest any album ever has.
“This is so amazing! It’s such an honour to be recognized by Guinness World Records,” Smith said.
“It’s been an unbelievable eighteen months – the album exceeded even my wildest dreams thanks to the incredible support of my fans, and to record the first ever Bond theme to reach No 1 in the UK is a real privilege.”
Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said: “Sam Smith has had an incredible impact on the music industry since his début album first hit the charts last year and the longevity of its stay is truly astonishing.
“His second Guinness World Records title is equally as impressive as many talented artists for over half a century have tried and failed to write a James Bond theme and get it to the top of the charts, so what Sam has achieved will always be remembered in the record books.”
Smith, who came out as gay last year, previously joked that he enjoys the idea of people who oppose LGBT rights listening to his music.
He said that he has fans who still have no idea about his sexuality, which is not overtly referenced in his music, adding: “I like the idea that there may be homophobic guys who listen to my record and they have no clue that I’m gay!”
‘Spectre’ is released on October 26.
