Business secretary Sajid Javid has said he is “very proud” of the government’s introduction of equal marriage at the PinkNews Awards.
Mr Javid, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills was speaking at the third annual PinkNews Awards this evening at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The Conservative minister, who was previously Minister for Equalities before the role was handed to Education Secretary Nicky Morgan last year, spoke about the need to challenge homophobia in the workplace at the event.
He said that companies should be: “open to all types of talent, no matter where it comes from. Some companies have done a lot better at promoting that than many others.”
He also spoke of his own experience with racism: “I’m no stranger to inequality. I grew up as a young lad being verbally abused and physically abused because of my colour or people didn’t like a certain religion.
“So it’s no surprise I’ve always been a strong advocate for equality.”
The PinkNews Awards are generously supported by Lloyds Banking Group.
