Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy comes out as gay
World-champion skier Gus Kenworthy has come out as gay.
Olympic medallist Gus Kenworthy has revealed he is gay in a recent interview.
He said that he wanted to wait until he was the best in the world at freestyle skiing before opening up about his sexuality.
The 24-year-old took home a silver medal at the Sochi games in Men’s freestyle skiing – but later revealed that second place just wasn’t good enough.
“I never got to be proud of what I did in Sochi because I felt so horrible about what I didn’t do,” he told EPSN magazine.
“I didn’t want to come out as the silver medallist from Sochi. I wanted to come out as the best freeskier in the world.”
He also discussed the difficulties of denying his sexuality whilst at the games, often telling reporters he was straight – despite the fact that his boyfriend was there supporting him.
“Part of [the stress] is the fact that I’ve never had a TV boyfriend. That’s actually something I want so bad – a TV boyfriend,” he revealed.
In an amazing year for the skier, he finished the season’s number one skier despite vowing to retire earlier in the year.
The Olympic medallist revealed his sexuality as part of a cover story sharing a link to the interview on his Twitter account and writing; “I am gay.”
Earlier this month, American figure skater Adam Rippon also came out as gay.
The champion silver medallist spoke out about his sexuality in Skating magazine – in which he tackled head-on the stereotypes of the sport.
He said: “Being gay is not something that defines me. What defines me is what my mom always taught me: to treat everyone with respect, to always be a hard worker and to be kind.”
