Caitlyn Jenner gets second season of ‘I Am Cait’ despite ratings tumble
Despite struggling to maintain an audience, Caitlyn Jenner’s reality show I Am Cait has been renewed for a second season.
16.9 million tuned in back in April to watch the former Olympian and reality TV star come out as trans in an interview with Diane Sawyer.
However, the ratings for E! her transition documentary series I Am Cait collapsed across the show’s first run.
Though 3.9 million viewers tuned in to watch the first episode, the finale was watched by just 1.02 million – less than family show ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’.
However, E! confirmed today that the show will return next year fir a second run, despite the drop in interest.
Caitlyn Jenner confirmed in a statement: “I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation.”
Jeff Olde of E! said: “Caitlyn’s story has ignited a global conversation on the transgender community on a scale that has never been seen before.
“We are honored Caitlyn has chosen to continue to share her ongoing story with our viewers around the world.”
The release sent out by E! announcing the news cites the ratings record for the very first episode of the show, but does not reference the remainder of the season.
The show had picked up praise for focussing on wider trans issues, and not just the star’s personal life.
While many expected the show to be all about Jenner’s personal journey, she also drew attention to eleven trans women who have been murdered in the US alone in 2015.
She said: “I feel bad that these, especially young people, are going through such a difficult time in their life. We don’t want people dying over this. We don’t want people murdered over this stuff.”
