Guardian columnist Jack Monroe comes out as trans
Food blogger Jack Monroe has come out as transgender.
Monroe, who blogs for various publication including the Guardian, revealed their decision to come out on Twitter.
On coming out as transgender, they wrote: “Yes I am transgender. Not all trans people transition from one binary gender to another.”
After coming out the campaigner was praised by followers, but the Mail Online described Jack’s coming out as “premature”, and a “setback”.
Writing on their blog, Jack said: “Dear Daily Mail, transitioning isn’t a setback, it’s a freedom”.
The Mail article also speculated that Jack was going to have their chest reduced as part of their transition.
Jack responded: “BECAUSE SURGERY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ALL OF THIS BECAUSE TITS AND COCKS AND COCKS AND TITS.
“It’s so puerile. If you care a jot about accuracy, I am currently training for a marathon in April so will see how my body shape changes naturally with running and weight training before making any snap decisions about surgical procedures.”
Jack added: “The preferred term is ‘chest reduction’ rather than ‘breast removal’ BTW. As for any other surgical speculation, I already have bigger balls than your entire newspaper, to say nothing of my cock collection, and we’ll leave that there.”
The Guardian columnist and poverty campaigner changed their name to Jack when they were younger, moving away from a feminine name in line with their gender identity.
However, they hit out at the Daily Mail for claiming their “real name” isn’t Jack – and revealed they are taking legal action in a blog post.
