Trans inmate’s mum says she is ’10 times happier’ after move to female prison
The mother of a trans woman who was moved to a female prison after initially being imprisoned in a male one has said she is “10 times happier”.
It emerged this week that 26 year old trans woman Tara Hudson had been sentenced to 12 weeks in the all-male Bristol Prison.
Current policy states that a Gender Recognition Certificate is required for trans prisoners to be placed in the correct prison for their gender, which Ms Hudson did not have despite living full-time as female for six years.
The Ministry of Justice has repeatedly declined to intervene in the case– but senior sources in Whitehall and Parliament on Friday confirmed to PinkNews that she will be moved to a female facility, HM Prison Eastwood Park.
On Saturday, Jackie Brooklyn, 48, Tara’s mother, confirmed that she had been moved, and that she is much happier in the female facility.
She said: “Tara’s a lot happier where she is. She said it’s 10 times better than Horfield (HMP Bristol). She was getting a lot of sexual abuse and comments there.
“I was very relieved because there were a lot of rumours and then it was confirmed that she had been moved. When I had the phone call from her I was just so relieved.”
The Gloucester Citizen reports that Brooklyn had been told by Hudson that she was sexually harassed in the male prison.
