Sir Elton John: Germaine Greer is an ‘attention seeker’
Sir Elton John has laid into Germaine Greer over a foul-mouthed rant about transgender people.
Speaking to the Victoria Derbyshire Show recently, feminist author Germaine Greer got “pretty cross” about transgender people.
She said: “Just because you lop off your d**k and then wear a dress doesn’t make you a f***ing woman.
“I’ve asked my doctor to give me long ears and liver spots and I’m going to wear a brown coat but that doesn’t turn me into a f***ing cocker spaniel.
“I do understand that some people are born intersex and they deserve support in coming to terms with their gender but it’s not the same thing.
“A man who gets his dick chopped off is actually inflicting an extraordinary act of violence on himself.”
Greer’s comments have sparked a series of debates about feminism and the trans community.
However, Sir Elton John was not amused by the transphobic rant.
Speaking to the BBC, he said: “It sounds like she is living in another century, to be honest with you. She is an attention seeker.
“There are a plethora of people being born who are uncomfortable in their own skin as being male or female, and want to change.
“I’m not a transgender person – but we have to have sympathy for them and we have to stop the treatment, the barbaric treatment for people like that, especially in prisons.
“They’re easy targets.”
The pair have had exchanges of words in the past – earlier this year Greer has warned that motherhood is being “de-constructed” because the singer’s husband is listed as ‘mother’ on his children’s birth certificate.
Greer said: “Sir Elton John and his ‘wife’ David Furnish have entered on the birth certificate of their two sons that David Furnish is the mother.
“That will give you an idea of how the concept of motherhood has emptied out. It’s gone. It’s been deconstructed.”
