Pastor who defeated Houston LGBT rights: ‘the bible can cure trans people’
David Welch has claimed that transgender people can be ‘cured’ with ‘biblical therapy’.
According to a report in the Houston Herald, Welch said that that he “felt transgender people disrespected the Christian God by wanting a body other than the one he created for them.”
He also said that transgender people “should seek Biblical therapy to settle their confusion.”
Welch was one of the leading organisers in the campaign against the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO).
After a bitter campaign that focused on transgender bathroom access, HERO was overwhelmingly voted down by the residents of Houston.
Welch is also a member of the US Pastors council, who were one of the major backers of the ‘Campaign for Houston’ whose slogan in their anti-HERO campaign was “No men in women’s bathrooms.”
After the vote, Houston’s openly lesbian Mayor Annise Parker said “This was a campaign of fear-mongering and deliberate lies,” .
“No one’s rights should be subject to a popular vote.”
Welch has previously said that he prays for God to “free” the mayor from her “condition.”
