The 44th POTUS has become the first sitting President to be photographed for an LGBT magazine.

Barack Obama has become the first acting leader of the United States to appear on the front on an LGBT publication.

The historic moment, captured in Out, shows Obama smiling in black and white.

The cover reads: “Our President. Ally. Hero. Icon.”

The images come after the magazine named Obama their Ally of the Year – as part of their OUT100 2015 list – for his continued support of the LGBT community.

During an interview with the magazine, the US leader tells how his mother “instilled in me the strong belief that every person is of idea of equal worth” from an early age.

“At the same time, growing up as a black guy with a funny name, I was often reminded of exactly what it felt like to be on the outside,” he said.

And though he has seen a lot of progress being made in terms of LGBT equality, the president is certain his daughter’s generation will be “even more progressive”.

“To Malia and Sasha and their friends, discrimination in any form against anyone doesn’t make sense,” he explained.

“It doesn’t dawn on them that friends who are gay or friends’ parents who are same-sex couples should be treated differently than anyone else,” he says.

“The next generation is spurring change not just for future generations, but for my generation, too

“As president, and as a dad, that makes me proud,” he continues. “It makes me hopeful.”

Obama also broached the subject of Kentucky clerk Kim Davies – who earlier this was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licences to same-sex couples.

However, though the president says he believes in religious freedom, he also believes that nobody is above the law.

“I am a man of faith and believe deeply in religious freedom, but at the end of the day, nobody is above the rule of law—especially someone who voluntarily takes an oath to uphold that law,” he told the magazine.

Before same-sex marriage became legal across the US, the leader was forced to deny claims that he mislead people into believing he opposed marriage equality.

The President officially opposed same-sex marriage in his 2008 Presidential campaign, but later claimed to be “evolving” on the issue until he came out strongly in favour in 2012.

Others honoured in the OUT100 list include trans model and activist Aydian Dowling, Years and Years frontman Olly Alexander and singer Jess Glynne.
