Johnny Depp ‘very proud’ of daughter Lily-Rose for coming out
The actor says he and his daughter have a ‘super-tight’ relationship.
Earlier this year, model and actress Lily-Rose made a subtle statement about her sexuality – by taking part in the Self-Evident project, which aims to promote society’s inclusiveness and acceptance of LGBT people in America.
It is still unclear where on the spectrum she falls, but fellow activists have welcomed her decision to use her personal experience to help others deal with their sexuality.
And though the move may have won the young star thousands of new supporters, there is one man who has always been her number one fan – her father Johnny.
The actor recently discussed his close relationship with his daughter – and how he knew about her sexuality long before she came out publicly.
“She’s got thousands of followers on social media, and they were all taken completely by surprise,” he told the Daily Mail.
“But not me. I already knew because she tells me everything – she’s not afraid to say anything to me.”
“We’re super-tight and I’m very proud of our relationship.”
The actor went to express his pride for Lily-Rose – claiming she is much smarter than most of the adults he knows.
“Lily’s really together – she’s a sharp kid and one of the smartest human beings I have ever met.”
“She’s far surpassed myself there – and my friends, too!”
However, that does not mean the Edward Scissorhands star does not worry about her.
Depp has previously voiced his “concern” over his daughter’s quick rise to fame since coming out.
“No matter how grown-up she gets, I’ll never stop worrying about her. It’s a father-daughter thing,” he confessed.
“She’s got a sensible head on her shoulders, and I trust her to lead a sensible, responsible life, but I can’t ever see the day coming when I just switch off to let her make her own way in the world.”
The actor recently revealed a conversation he had with Disney executives over his portrayal of Jack Sparrow, during which he asked them: “Don’t you know all my characters are gay?”
Depp thought he was going to be fired from the set of the Disney movie for his wacky portrayal of the pirate – because studio bosses thought he was “going over the top.”
“What the f**k are you doing?” he was asked. “When they asked if it was gay, I said: ‘Didn’t you know all my characters are gay?’”
