Trans man who thought he was overweight shocked to discover pregnancy
Kayden Coleman thought the extra weight was due to an unhealthy lifestyle.
A transgender man who thought he was out of shape discovered he was actually expecting a baby.
Kayden Coleman began his transition over ten years ago and preparing for a mastectomy – which required him to stop his hormone treatment.
It was during this time that Mr Coleman says he fell pregnant – but did not realise for nearly five months.
He says he alerted his partner, Elijah, after he started to experience severe back pain and felt extremely bloated.
“It felt like there was a pillow under my stomach but there was no pillow,” he told The Mirror.
The pair then joked that they should do a pregnancy test – and were floored by the results.
After a doctor confirmed that the couple were indeed expecting a baby, they used what little time they had preparing for their new arrival.
However, Mr Coleman say that even after their daughter – who they named Azealia – was born, it took him a while to adjust to his new role.
“Even when I first held her it hadn’t sunk in that she was mine, so I didn’t really feel much,” he said.
“But I knew things would never be the same again. I was so happy to finally see her face.”
Elijah also spoke of the pair’s struggle with parenthood, and how he had to support his husband during a severe bout of postnatal depression.
“It was tough. Kayden had postnatal depression for about a year. I wasn’t around much and we don’t have family nearby, so it was really hard,” he said.
“People who say it’s a joy are either lying or they have a lot of help from family.”
Kayden also had to come out to his husband’s family, who struggled to accept him as they had no idea that he was trans.
“It must have been difficult hearing that your son’s boyfriend was pregnant, I don’t deny that,” Elijah explained.
“But I felt like there were some unkind comments and I didn’t appreciate that.”
Despite their early struggles, the couple say their family life is “better than ever” as their daughter approaches her second birthday.
“Now it feels great. I couldn’t imagine, and don’t want to imagine, life without her. She is amazing,” Kayden said.
The couple also say that they are determined to give Azealia a “normal” upbringing – and say they are just like any other family.
“We are more than capable of loving our children just as much and just as efficiently as any other parent.”
“Our children will not be any more confused or bullied about my being trans than any other kid is about something like having a single parent.”
