HIV group launches to fill lack of support in the North East
tHrIVe NE hopes to support those living with HIV in the Newcastle area.
A new support and social group has been launched by three activists in the Newcastle area, in order to support those living with HIV and their friends and families.
tHrIVe says they are “open to people from all backgrounds that are living with HIV and they are welcome to bring along a negative friend, family member or partner.”
Drew Dalton – the Chair and Fundraising and Development co-ordinator – told PinkNews what tHrIVe NE means to him.
“In a time of cuts and austerity, we as volunteers, offer a place for local people to feel safe, to discuss the issues important to them and to take part in social events,” he said.
He also says the group aims “to reduce the loneliness and stigma often linked to living with HIV.”
“We decided to set up tHrIVe because of a lack of organised support for those living with HIV and those closest to them,” James Hanson-McCormick – the group’s People and Activities co-ordinator – added.
“We hope we can provide a safe space for not only those living with the virus but also those affected by it in other ways.
“Family members, friends and partners have been at a loss on where to turn for advice and support in the north east and we want to change that.”
tHrIVe NE launch with a fundraising event at Secrets Bar, Scotswood Road, Newcastle upon Tyne tonight from 8pm. There is raffle prizes and cabaret.
The first social group meeting will be on 7th December at the Tyneside Cinema.
