Katie Hopkins just got her ‘gay icon’ status revoked
Michelle Visage has hit out at her former friend Katie Hopkins – claiming her extreme comments disqualify her from being a gay icon.
The RuPaul’s Drag Race judge struck up an unlikely friendship with the columnist and reality TV star while appearing on Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year.
However, she has since moved to distance herself from the views of Hopkins, who most recently claimed that “100 percent” of British Muslims want homosexuality to be banned.
Hopkins is no stranger to controversial comments – from comparing refugees to cockroaches, to claiming gays are ‘intolerant’ for boycotting fashion designers who attacked same-sex parenting.
Speaking to TheGayUK, Visage said that while Hopkins might aspire to be a ‘gay icon’, she’s pretty far from it.
She said: “You can’t say you want to be a gay icon on one hand and then support Dolce and Gabbana on the other.
“It just doesn’t make sense. And the Holocaust comments, the immigration comments, it’s just too much for me.”
Hopkins declared herself a ‘gay icon’ earlier this year, writing: “My ambition to be a taller, uglier Kylie is realised. A gay icon in tan tights & reinforced gusset. Come on boys xx”
In a column in June, Hopkins claimed that gay and lesbian couples shouldn’t be allowed fertility treatment on on the NHS – and described diversity officers as “lunatics”.
Visage first renounced the pair’s friendship in May after Hopkins ranted about refugees.
The former singer said: “She has crossed a line for me, talking about the immigrants, saying that they should be killed. Human lives are human lives.
“We also have an issue with immigration in this country, but I don’t believe anybody should be at the border ready to shoot them in the head.
“Their lives are horrible in some of these countries, I would do the same thing and try to break free for a better life.
“For her to be there calling them all cockroaches and saying they should all be killed is disgusting and I can’t support.”
