Donald Trump’s campaign slogan just got hijacked for gay rights
Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign slogan has been re-appropriated by an LGBT rights group.
The billionaire is currently the front-runner in the race for the 2016 Republican nomination, and is running under the slogan ‘Make America Great Again’.
However, the reality TV star-turned-politician – who was recently forced to deny mocking a disabled journalist – has found himself in the sights of the Human Rights Campaign.
The group is selling hats sporting the slogan ‘Make America Gay Again’ – riffing off the ones usually seen on Trump’s head.
The reverse of the cap features HRC’s equality logo, and the words “LGBTQ Equality”.
The cap is available from the HRC store for $26, with profits from the hat going to the group’s advocacy work.
It says: “The Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 1.5 million members and supporters nationwide.
“As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, HRC envisions an America where LGBT people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.”
Trump has a poor record on LGBT rights, though he has signalled a shift away from opposing same-sex marriage directly.
The candidate recently delivered a speech to a listed anti-LGBT hate group that frequently compares gay rights to the Holocaust.
The reality TV star made an off-book speech to the Family Research Council without a teleprompter – in which he bizarrely did not once mention God, Jesus, gay people, LGBT rights or any of the group’s goals.
He also failed to acknowledge anti-gay clerk Kim Davis, the guest of honour at the event.
When asked flat-out whether he is homophobic in October, Trump insisted: “No, I think that I’m a very nice person. I love people.”
