Cardinal tells gay US ambassador to go and do housework ‘like a good wife’
A Catholic cardinal has lashed out at an openly gay US Ambassador, claiming he should be focussing on housework if he wants to be a “wife”.
Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodríguez, the head of the Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic, made the claim about the US ambassador to the country, Wally Brewster.
Mr Brewster is one of a number of out diplomats appointed by President Obama, alongside John Berry (Australia), Daniel Baer (Austria), James Costos (Spain), and Rufus Gifford (Denmark).
However, despite being welcomed in the Dominican Republic, he has not found favour with militantly anti-gay church leader Rodríguez.
Rodríguez told AP that Brewster was abusing his role by speaking out against corruption, claiming: “That man needs to go back to his embassy. Let him focus on housework, since he’s the wife to a man.”
The US Embassy declined to comment.
Rodríguez has previously referred to Brewster as a ‘faggot‘, claiming: “Diplomacy is not for that sort of thing, an absolutely negative propaganda.
“I am totally against that, everybody knows it, my position is not new, not because this man with this kind of attitude has now arrived.
“He should take his pride elsewhere.”
The Dominican Catholic diocese has previously been embroiled in a child abuse scandal, and has been accused of harbouring paedophiles in the past.
