Cate Blanchett explains why won’t put her daughter in pink dresses

Cate Blanchett has opened up about her view of gender identity – explaining she feels “a little bit like an amoeba”.
The actress is currently starring in lesbian drama ‘Carol’, which tells the story of a young aspiring photographer and her relationship with an older woman going through a difficult divorce.
Speaking to the Metro, the actress explained that she doesn’t dress her newly-adopted baby daughter Edith in pink dresses.
She said: “I was traumatised the first time I bought her a dress. It was a black one.
“I don’t think I treat her any differently than the boys. And with the boys I didn’t think ‘Oh, I have a son’, it was always, ‘what’s this creature’s personality?’.
“Someone’s gender is never the first thing I’ve seen about them.”
Explaining her own view of gender, she said: “My own gender is not something I think about. I feel a little bit like an amoeba in that way.”
The actress, who was recently misquoted as saying she has had sexual relationships with women, quickly clarified: “I don’t mean my sexuality – I mean my gender.”
Blanchett spoke out earlier this year after she was quoted as having said she has had “many” relationships with women in the past, in a Variety interview.
The actress said the quotes were edited to remove part of her answer, clarifying she had never had a sexual relationship with a woman.
She said: “From memory, the conversation ran: ‘Have you had relationships with women?’
“And I said: ‘Yes, many times. Do you mean have I had sexual relationships with women? Then the answer is no.’ But that obviously didn’t make it.”
