Kim Davis flops in TIME Person of the Year poll
The results for TIME’s Person of the Year poll are in… and it’s not good news for nominee Kim Davis.
Davis, the clerk for Rowan County, Kentucky, was briefly jailed earlier this year after she defied court orders to stop blocking same-sex marriage.
The clerk, who has since become the darling of the far-right ‘religious freedom’ movement, was on the shortlist for TIME’s Person of the Year award – which recognises the person who “for better or for worse…has done the most to influence the events of the year”.
However, after a period of public voting, a reader’s winner is in: and it’s definitely not Kim Davis.
The clerk placed 55th out of 60 in the poll with 0.6% of the vote – behind ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Syrian President Bashar Assad, Kim Kardashian, and Vladimir Putin.
She was narrowly ahead of extreme homophobic Presidential candidate Ted Cruz, who has defended his link to a ‘death to gays’ preacher.
The poll was won by Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders, who received 10.2% of the vote.
The official TIME Person of the Year has yet to be confirmed, however.
Davis’ flop comes despite the Christian law firm-cum-hate group representing Davis urging supporters to vote for her.
The group asked: “Who more than Kim Davis has influenced the news in the past year?
“Kim Davis inspired a nation and the world to fight for religious liberty when she chose a prison cell rather than sacrificing her conscience.”
