Venezuela elects first trans person to National Assembly
The first out trans person has been elected to Venezuela’s National Assembly.
Tamara Adrián was elected for the Popular Will, a socialist party, which is pro-LGBT.
She will represent the capital city of Caracas.
Speaking to the Washington Blade, Peru’s first out trans person to be elected to a public office, Luisa Revilla Urcia, congratulated Adrián.
“We are very pleased with another trans woman in power,” she said to the Blade. “This is a great triumph.”
The Adrián’s victory was announced as the National Electoral Council President Tibisay Lucena announced that the governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela had lost its majority in the Assembly.
Individual result details have not been released by the Council, but President Nicolás Maduro conceded defeat.
While Adrián’s victory is a huge step forward to transgender visibility in the country, the elections took place amid an economic crisis.
