Angela Merkel revealed as TIME Person of the Year
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been named TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year 2015.
The Chancellor was announced by TIME today, and was awarded the honour after a public vote for the shortlist closed earlier this week.
Merkel is only the fourth woman since 1927 to top the list.
TIME noted her work on the European debt crisis as one of the reasons she was named as Person of the Year, and for allowing thousands of refugees into Germany.
Merkel, however, remains one of the staunchest opponents of same-sex marriage, and has declined to act on many calls for it to be legalised in Germany.
Others in the shortlist include Donald Trump, who placed at number three, and Caitlyn Jenner, who was number seven.
Jenner was named as number seven in the list for her work to progress trans rights, and for her visibility.
Trump’s controversial comments, and attitude of indifference towards his critics were reasons why TIME named him in the shortlist.
The public poll was won by Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders, who received 10.2% of the vote.
The results for TIME’s Person of the Year poll were announced earlier this week… and it was not good news for nominee Kim Davis.
