Straight couple accidentally issued ‘same-sex marriage licence’
A straight couple in the US has inadvertently entered into a ‘same-sex marriage’… of sorts.
Michelle Lacey and her husband Michael Laurin, were married recently.
But after they tied the knot, they noticed a glaring mistake on their marriage licence.
Both Lacey and Laurin are listed as “groom” on the licence.
The couple, in their early 60s, want to live part time in Arizona, but Michelle, originally from Canada, says the error is affecting the immigration process.
“It’s going to be a hassle dealing with immigration,” Lacey said. “This really messes us up,” her husband added.
As well as the couple and their witnesses, the document was signed by six people, apparently none of who realised the error.
Now forced to travel back to Phoenix, Lacey has been told to pay $319 in court fees.
The court officials from Maricopa County have said it is the responsibility of the couple to ensure the wording is correct, and they get to choose from terms like “groom”, “bride” or “spouse”.
Despite all of the inconvenience, the couple still see the funny side.
“We have laughed about it. I call her the cutest groom I’ve ever married,” Laurin said.
