Presidential hopeful: I’ll appoint new Supreme Court justices to undo gay marriage ruling
Republican Presidential wannabe Marco Rubio has said that he plans to replace Supreme Court justices with people who will undo the equal marriage ruling.
The highest court in the US ruled earlier this year that same-sex marriage is a constitutionally protected right, cementing the right to marry in all 50 states.
A number of Republicans including Presidential front-runner Donald Trump conceded that opposing same-sex marriage is a “dead issue” following the decision – but other candidates continue to oppose the ruling.
US Senator and Presidential hopeful Marco Rubio – once considered a moderate in the party – has tacked right hard in recent weeks on the issue, claiming that God’s law “trumps” the court’s ruling and pledging to undo it.
This week Senator Rubio has made his plan to override the ruling clear – he wants to rig the court in his favour and demand a do-over.
He told Meet the Press: “It is the current law. I don’t believe any case law is settled law. Any future Supreme Court can change it.
“And ultimately, I will appoint Supreme Court justices that will interpret the Constitution as originally constructed.”
He added: “If you want to change the definition of marriage, then you need to go to state legislatures and get them to change it. Because states have always defined marriage.
“And that’s why some people get married in Las Vegas by an Elvis impersonator. And in Florida, you have to wait a couple days when you get your permit.
“Every state has different marriage laws. But I do not believe that the court system was the right way to do it.”
Sadly Senator Rubio did not clarify whether this opposition of ‘federal interference’ in marriage extends to 1967 case Loving v Virginia, which brought interracial marriage to all 50 states.
Rubio has also pledged to revert an executive order signed by Barack Obama which outlawed anti-LGBT discrimination for federal contractors.
