Austria stuns at Miss Universe pageant with fabulous Conchita Wurst tribute
You might have heard of a mix-up at Miss Universe last night – but before that, Austria took the contest to another level.
The country was represented at the contest by former refugee Amina Dagi, aged 20.
Dagi pulled out all the stops for the contest’s ‘national dress’ category, taking on the guise of one of the country’s other most famous winners.
With the aid of a custom dress and make-up, Ms Dagi transformed herself into Conchita Wurst, the iconic drag diva who took the Eurovision crown for Austria in 2014.
According to The Local, her custom outfit (complete with beard, EU flag and rainbow ribbon) was created by talented Swedish designer Aviad Arik Herman – who emulating some of Conchita’s buzz-words said: “The meaningful costume brings the urgent message, and stands for #courage, #tolerance, #acceptance, #equality & being #unstoppable!”
The model, grew up in Dagestan – a federal subject of Russia, located in the North Caucasus region.
However, when she was aged just eight her family were forced to flee the country – and started a new life in Austria.
After falling in love with her new home, she was crowned Miss Austria 2012 at 17. She was handed the title Miss Universe Austria this year after the reigning champ quit – paving the way for her to participate at the Miss Universe pageant.
However, she didn’t take the crown at the contest, which went to Miss Colombia… no, wait, we mean Miss Philippines.
Meanwhile, the real Conchita is back, and she’s fiercer than ever.
The singer recently released an incredible new track, titled ‘Where Have All The Good Men Gone?’ – which chronicles pain at finding a decent lover.
She sings: “We got divorced guys, lonely guys, men who never leave their wives… tell me: Where have all the good men gone?”
