James Blunt wants to be considered an ‘honorary’ gay man

Singer James Blunt says heā€™d like to be considered as an ā€˜honoraryā€™ gay man.

The Youā€™re Beautiful singer made the comments to Miriam GonzĆ”lez DurĆ”ntez in an interview with the BBCā€™s Today Programme.

Ms GonzĆ”lez DurĆ”ntez ā€“ a leading lawyer who is married to former Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg ā€“ spoke to the singer while guest-editing the Radio 4 show.

He explained: ā€œI sing songs that arenā€™t very macho and so people will say, ā€˜oh youā€™re effeminate or gayā€™ as if calling me gay would be an insult.

ā€œTo call me ā€˜gayā€™ is a compliment and I would like to be considered an honorary gay man because Iā€™m totally at ease with myself.

ā€œI suppose Iā€™ve written songs that are sensitive because I wouldnā€™t normally describe those emotions in everyday life.ā€

Referencing his time in the armed forces, Blunt added: ā€œI also do see a relevance to what my previous job was. I was a reconnaissance officer. My job was going out there ahead of my commanders.

ā€œTo go and find the enemy, locate the enemy, target the enemy. To do so I had to be incredibly sensitive to my surroundingsā€¦ and be aware of their intentions. Thatā€™s what my job is now ā€“ to be sensitive to my surroundings and relay that to the listeners.

I got a bit of grief for not being as macho ā€“ if Iā€™d been macho Iā€™d have had an audience full of men. I had an audience full of women and Iā€™m happier that way round.ā€

Blunt previously had a spat with Labour MP Chris Bryant ā€“ branding him a ā€œclassist gimpā€ for raising the singerā€™s private-school upbringing.
