London’s LGBT-friendly ‘Open Barbers’ needs help to find a new venue
A LGBT-friendly barbers has begun fundraising to find a new venue.
The ‘Open Barbers’, which aims to provide an affordable hairdressing project, lost its original venue last year.
Now, after seeking a new venue, organisers have asked donors to support the project in moving into a new venue.
The space, led by queer and trans hairdressers, aims to provide a safe space for LGBT people to have hair and beauty treatments, as well as provide a safe social space.
Having located a new venue, Open Barbers is looking to raise £25,000 in order to refurbish a new space for use.
“Our new space will be open 7 days a week, and in a time where so many LGBTQ friendly spaces are closing down, this space will not only provide affordable social space for haircuts, tea, and fanzines, but will boost our capacity to increase our services and host other social entrepreneurs,” reads the fundraising page.
Open Barbers describes itself as “a hairdressing social enterprise welcoming people of any gender, sexuality, hair type and hair length… We started as a pop up back in 2011, in response to the difficulties we and others have faced getting a respectful haircut that is congruent with our identities. Our pricing policy is sliding scale which means it is not only gender neutral but also fair and within the income means of each client.”
The project has raised £21,300 so far, and has seven days to raise the full amount.
The Open Barbers runs an ‘affordable hairdressing’ project, which is “open to all genders and sexualities”. It provides an affordable and accessible space.
