Dame Edna Everage has bizarrely ā€˜disassociatedā€™ herself from comments made by the person who plays her.

Barry Humphries, the comedian behind drag icon Dame Edna Everage, claimed in an interview this week that he agrees with author Germaine Greerā€˜s derisive comments about ā€œmen who believe that they are women and have themselves castratedā€.

He said: ā€œI agree with Germaine! Youā€™re a mutilated man, thatā€™s all. Self-mutilation, whatā€™s all this carry on? Caitlyn Jenner ā€“ what a publicity-seeking ratbag.

ā€œItā€™s all given the stamp ā€“ not of respectability, but authenticity or something. If you criticise anything youā€™re racist or sexist or homophobic.ā€

Greer has previously claimed that ā€œlopping off your d**k and wearing a dress doesnā€™t make you a f***ing womanā€ and has accused Caitlyn Jenner of transitioning so she could steal attention from her Kardashian co-stars.

Referencing the controversy over Humphriesā€™ comments today, Dame Ednaā€™s official social media channels posted a bizarre message attempting to ā€˜distance herselfā€™ from her own alter ego.

She wrote: ā€œIā€™m partly Aboriginal. Iā€™m certainly Jewish.

ā€œI could play Canasta at the age of five. And I disassociate myself from anything Barry Humphries has to say.

ā€œI fired him years ago but he refuses to accept dismissal. The poor thing is losing the plot.

ā€œHe deserves our pity not our disapproval.ā€
