Indiana bill would charge trans people $5,000 to go to the toilet
A bill has been introduced in Indiana which would fine people $5,000 dollars to go to the bathroom.
Republican Senator Jim Tomes filed the bill, titled the ‘Single-sex facilities Act’.
The bill would effectively ban any toilets that aren’t designated ‘male’ or ‘female’.
It adds: “Student facilities in school buildings must be designated for use by female students or male students, and may be used only by the students of the biological gender for which the facility is designated”.
The bill also “makes it a Class A misdemeanor” for a man or trans woman to “knowingly or intentionally enters a single sex public facility that is designed to be used by females” – or for a woman or trans man to “knowingly or intentionally enters a single sex public facility that is designed to be used by males”.
The wide-reaching law appears to make no exceptions for instances such as opposite-sex carers and students, nor for adults entering opposite-sex bathrooms in emergency situations.
The law has a surreal definition of gender, insisting that ‘female’ shall be defined as having “at least one X chromosome and no Y chromosome”, and ‘male’ as having “at least one X chromosome and at least one Y chromosome”.
Breaking the law is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 dollars – or up to one year in jail.
The law is strangely reminiscent of the acclaimed Broadway show ‘Urinetown: The Musical’, in which a tyrannical, corrupt organisation backed by shady lawmakers charges people ever-increasing amounts to go to the toilet.
