Sam Smith blames himself for break up with ex-boyfriend
The singer discussed his heartbreak ahead of last weekend’s Golden Globe Awards.
Sam Smith has refused to blame his ex-boyfriend for the breakdown of their relationship.
The singer dated model Jonathan Zeizel for a few months between 2014 and 2015, with the pair going public after only a few weeks via Instagram.
However, the star says he was to blame for their separation – although not for the reason you might think.
“It was my fault,” Smith told People.com on the red carpet of the Golden Globes.
“I fell in love with him. I shouldn’t have done that.”
“We’re still friends,” he added when asked if the pair are still in touch. “It’s all good.”
Although sombre throughout the interview, a smile was soon brought to Smith’s face after winning the Best Original Song award for ‘Writing On The Wall’.
The four-time Grammy winner won the award along with Jimmy Napes for the title track of recent James Bond outing, ‘Spectre’.
“I honestly, on a real level, I genuinely didn’t think we were going to get this,” Smith said as he accepted the gong.
“This has been the most interesting night of my life.”
Smith recently said he is taking a break from music – and will be throwing himself into the dating world instead.
Revealing his plans after performing at last year’s Hollywood Bowl, he said: “I am sad, but also it feels right.”
“It’s my last performance in America, and it feels right to do it in such a beautiful setting.
“I’ve been going now for three years non-stop and it feels right for me to just go home and just live my life and be a 23-year-old.”
The singer added that he hopes to find some romance in his time off.
“My love life, the downs and ups, it never stops, so I’m always inspired by stuff like that, but it’d be good to spend some time dating.”
