Teen Wolf star Charlie Carver comes out as gay
Teen Wolf star Charlie Carver came out as gay in a letter spanning five Instagram posts.
Carver, who starred alongside James Franco and Zachary Quinto in ‘I Am Michael’, wrote on Instagram: “Be who you needed when you were younger.”
He wrote: “As a young man, I needed a young man in Hollywood to say that — and without being a dick about it, I owe it to myself, more than anything, to be who I needed when I was younger.”
The 27-year-old also wrote that he was out to his family, but suggested coming out could have affected his career.
He said he wanted to be “benevolently neutral”, and a “canvas” for roles in his new acting career.
“If I came out, I feared I would be limiting myself to a type, to a perception with limits that I was not professionally comfortable with,” he wrote.
“And I created in my imagination an Industry that was just as rigid in this belief as well.”
The star went on to say he is “forever grateful” to those in Hollywood who helped him realise he did not need to stay in the closet.
Carver’s Teen Wolf co-star and twin brother Max is straight, as acknowledged in the Instagram post.
“Let the record show my twin brother is just as cool for being straight,” he concludes.
Carver was announced to be starring in ‘I Am Michael’ in August 2014.
It was revealed early on in the making of the film, which follows ex-gay activist Michael Glatze, that Carver would appear in a threesome scene with Franco and Quinto, which he described as “hot as hell”.
However, he was commenting on the actual temperature in the studio, saying: “We were in an attic in Long Island in the middle of the summer… and the air conditioning was broken… So it was just… uh, memorable?”
Despite saying he initially wasn’t comfortable with doing the scene, he later came around to the idea, an said it was never intended to be “salacious”.
He joked: “I think when you have a scene like that, you have to have a sense of humor and just go for it.”
