Madonna pays moving onstage tribute to David Bowie (VIDEO)
The singer covered one of Bowie’s tracks as she paid tribute to her ‘inspiration’.
Madonna has paid tribute to music icon David Bowie following news of his unexpected death earlier this week.
The singer covered Bowie’s classic 1974 anthem ‘Rebel Rebel’ during the latest stop of her Rebel Heart tour in Houston.
The emotional performance was accompanied by images of Bowie projected across a giant screen.
“This is all fun and games, and I am privileged to be able to do what I do, but I want to pay tribute to a man who inspired my career,” she told the audience.
“If you haven’t heard about David Bowie, then look him up motherf***ers. He was one of the geniuses in the music industry, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 20th century.
“He changed my life when I went to see him in concert in Detroit.
“He showed me that it was ok to be different. And he’s the first Rebel Heart that I laid eyes on.”
Following the gig, she posted several more tributes on social media, including a tweet describing Bowie as her “favourite rebel”.
Bowie’s son Duncan Jones released a statement on social media earlier this week announcing his father’s untimely death.
“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer.
“While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
Jones later tweeted a picture of them together when he was a child, writing: “Very sorry and sad to say it’s true. I’ll be offline for a while. Love to all.”
