Mel Giedroyc to host UK Eurovision selection show
Mel Giedroyc is set to host the UK’s first national selection for a Eurovision entry in six years.
Every year since 2010 the BBC has chosen the country’s Eurovision entry internally – but after embarking on a large talent search for 2016, the decision will be put to the country.
Mel Giedroyc, Eurovision superfan and one half of comedy duo Mel and Sue, will host a TV selection show – which will air on BBC Four following BBC Three’s move online.
‘Eurovision: You Decide’ will be broadcast on Friday February 26 – with six shortlisted acts competing for a ticket to Stockholm, and the honour of representing the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.
Mel Giedroyc said: “I am a huge fan of the Eurovish and am honoured to be hosting this fantastic event.
“It’s very exciting that the Great British public will get the chance to choose who will be sent to Sweden and I know it’s going to be an amazing night.
“I can’t wait to get the party started!”
The Eurovision semi-finals in May will also air on BBC Four instead of BBC Three, with the final staying on BBC One.
BBC Four editor Cassian Harrison said: “I’m delighted that Eurovision: You Decide and both of the Semi Finals are coming to the channel this year.
“BBC Four is the home of music on TV in the UK, and as any fan will tell you, Eurovision is one of the biggest music events on the planet and is much more than just one night of TV, therefore it is only right that BBC Four is able to showcase Europe’s favourite music TV event right here in the UK.”
The Grand Final of the 61st Eurovision Song Contest is set to air on May 14.
