Donald Trump blasts ‘hypocrite’ rival for opposing gay rights but taking donations from gays
Donald Trump has continued his feud with Republican Presidential rival Ted Cruz – blasting him as a “hypocrite” for opposing LGBT rights but taking money from gay donors.
Senator Ted Cruz, an extreme opponent of LGBT rights, has recently been running attacks on Trump because the billionaire says he has no issue with gay people serving in the military.
Cruz raised questions about Trump’s “liberal New York values” during a TV debate, circulating a clip of Trump admitting that gay people in the military is “not something that would disturb” him.
Trump, who is comparatively moderate on LGBT rights, hit out at Cruz for his “hypocrisy” on the issue.
He tweeted a link to a story about Cruz attending a fundraising event hosted by Mati Weiderpass and Ian Reisner, owners of ‘gay friendly’ hotel Out NYC.
Cruz accepted the maximum possible donation from the pair – despite later claiming LGBT activists like Ellen Page are “liberal fascists”.
Mr Trump tweeted: “If Ted Cruz is so opposed to gay marriage, why did he accept money from people who espouse gay marriage?
“Everybody that loves the people of New York, and all they have been thru, should get hypocrites like Ted Cruz out of politics!”
Trump has a confused record on LGBT rights – shifting his opinion on same-sex marriage a number of times before conceding it is a “dead issue” following the Supreme Court ruling.
He has suggested in the past that he would support employment protections for gay people – but at the same time assured conservative lobbyists he wouldn’t block a bill that would allow discrimination against married gay couples
