Read Kate Bush’s beautiful tribute to David Bowie
Kate Bush has paid an emotional and heartbreaking tribute to the late artist David Bowie.
Writing in the Guardian at the weekend, the singer reflected on Bowie’s death from cancer last week, aged 69.
It was announced on social media that the artist behind Ziggy Stardust had died after an 18-month battle with cancer.
His sexual orientation, and that of his many personas, made the legend a gay icon.
Having only occasionally touched on why he chose to identify as gay, then bisexual, then later say he was neither, he has given a glimpse of what stopped him talking about it.
Bowie’s persona Ziggy Stardust, created when he released Space Oddity in 1969, was a bisexual alien rock star. The androgynous figure became a gay icon.
Calling him “brave”, “sexy”, and “intelligent”, the ‘Hounds of Love’ singer Bush wrote that thousands of people in the UK have been “flung into mourning and shock”.
She ended her words, saying: “Whatever journey his beautiful soul is now on, I hope he can somehow feel how much we all miss him.”

David Bowie had everything. He was intelligent, imaginative, brave, charismatic, cool, sexy and truly inspirational both visually and musically. He created such staggeringly brilliant work, yes, but so much of it and it was so good. There are great people who make great work but who else has left a mark like his? No one like him.
I’m struck by how the whole country has been flung into mourning and shock. Shock, because someone who had already transcended into immortality could actually die. He was ours. Wonderfully eccentric in a way that only an Englishman could be.
Whatever journey his beautiful soul is now on, I hope he can somehow feel how much we all miss him.
Among the thousands who paid tribute to Bowie since his death was Sir Elton John, who played an extended piano version of the song Space Oddity.
Sir Elton was not the first to pay tribute to Bowie, Madonna paid tribute by covering Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’ earlier this week.
