More than half of people are satisfied with level of gay acceptance
A new poll has found that the majority of Americans are satisfied with the current acceptance of the gay community.
A record high of 60% of the US say they are happy with the level of acceptance of gays and lesbians in the country.
However, 16% of Americans want to see more acceptance – while a worrying 14% want less, according to a new Gallup poll.
The results are based on telephone interviews conducted 6-10 January with a random sample of 1,012 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Democrats remain the most satisfied group for the fourth year in a row, with 67% of voters saying they are satisfied on the issue.
A further 59% of independents and 54% of Republicans agree.
A Gallup spokesperson said the rise in satisfaction is no doubt due to the Supreme Court legalising same-sex marriage nationwide last year.
However, as recently as 10 years ago, the majority of Americans were unhappy with the treatment of the gay community.
Satisfaction levels have dropped as low as 32%, reaching a record high of 53% last year.
Levels were at their lowest (27%) during the presidency of George W Bush – who famously called for a constitutional ban on gay marriage in 2004.
