Modern Family star explains why she called out Vine personality Nash Grier for homophobia
Modern Family star caused a stir earlier this month when she called out Vine personality Nash Grier for his homophobia.
Winter last week took to task the internet sensation who has millions of followers.
Nash Grier came under fire for the April video last year. The video – which has since been deleted – starts with a clip from an HIV awareness campaign. The clip says: “Get tested for HIV. It’s not a gay thing.” The video then cuts to Grier, who shouts: “Yes it is! FAG!”
Winter who stars as Alex in Modern Family, took advantage of the hashtag #FavNashVid, to bring to light comments he previously made about gay people.
Grier has 12.4 million Vine followers, 5.25 million Twitter followers and 4.6 million YouTube followers. He has since deleted the video and made an apology, but Winter doesn’t want people to forget.
Winter wrote: “#FavNashVid that one time when he was just super homophobic and ignorant? #whydoyouhavefans.”
Speaking on The Talk, Winter said: “I just find that it is so ridiculous that he has fans, because there are so many young people that look up to him. Young boys, young girls that love his Vines, love his work and stuff like that. It is so irresponsible and completely ignorant of him to be posting things that he knows nothing about…and hurtful things.”
She added: “I’m not the type of person that’s able to sit and watch somebody that has so many fans just destroy people so much. His words really harm so many people and for me it’s so irresponsible to put things like that… For me, it makes no sense.”
When the Vine star tweeted to ask her after her original posts to direct message him, she simply replied: “I’m good.”
