Ellen Page stresses the need for more Hollywood stars to come out
Ellen Page has discussed the importance of strong role models in the LGBT community.
The actress and LGBT advocate has once again urged fellow Hollywood stars who may be in the closet to be honest about their sexuality.
The Juno star ā who recently finished filming a new documentary exploring homophobia around the world ā said she hopes that one day ācoming outā is no longer an issue.
āItāll be amazing, the day when itās not a thing,ā she told The Guardian.
āWhen an actress doesnāt feel like she needs to make a speech.
āThatās obviously the goal.ā
Page ā who came out two years ago ā explained that part of her reason for discussing her own sexuality publicly to move past the āsadness and anxietyā she felt.
āI felt, letās just please be done with this chapter of discomfort and sadness and anxiety, and hurting my relationships, and all those things that come with it.ā
The Oscar-nominated star recently accused Hollywood of double standards against gay and lesbian actors.
The star hit out against being āpigeon holedā in gay roles ā after playing a series of straight roles in her previous films.
āNo one asks: āEllen, youāve done seven straight roles in a row ā shouldnāt you shake it up and do something queer?āā she said.
āThereās still that double standard. I look at all the things Iāve done in movies: Iāve drugged a guy, tortured someone, become a roller-derby star overnight.
āBut now Iām gay, I canāt play a straight person?ā
The actress also recently starred alongside Julianne Moore in same-sex marriage drama Freeheld.
