Anti-gay Republican Rand Paul is the latest to sashay away from Presidential bid
Rand Paul has become the latest Republican to end his Presidential bid – after flopping in Iowa.
Paul was one of the unprecedented 18 Republican candidates to put themselves forward to run for the 2016 Presidential nomination – higher than the number of contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race
However, the candidate, who claims he is personally ‘offended’ by the concept of same-sex marriage, became the latest Republican to drop out of the race today.
The Senator has increasingly rallied against LGBT rights, insisting employers should be able to fire people for being gay because gays should keep their “lifestyle… in their house”.
Of gay rights, he claimed previously: “I don’t think I’ve ever used the words gay rights because I don’t believe in rights based on your behaviour.”
However, he failed to pick up many conservative votes in this week’s Iowa caucus, with evangelicals throwing their weight behind Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump getting popular support.
Paul, who managed to pick up just one delegate in the Iowa caucuses, said: “It’s been an incredible honour to run a principled campaign for the White House.
“Today, I will end where I began, ready and willing to fight for the cause of Liberty.”
He is the latest in a string of candidates to sashay away, as the Republican field has narrowed down to a final 10.
All of the remaining Republicans are opposed to LGBT rights protections. Current frontrunner Ted Cruz has pledged to scrap same-sex marriage, while rival Donald Trump says he would “consider” appointing new Supreme Court justices to oppose the move.
