Boyband singer says he doesn’t want his sexuality labelled, media immediately labels him
Union J’s George Shelley might not want his sexuality to be labelled – but the media don’t seem to be paying much attention.
The boyband singer opened up about his sexuality this week to put an end to internet speculation, after he appeared on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!.
He said in a video: “I’ve been reading a lot of speculation online as to whether I’m, straight, gay or bi.
“It’s all these labels and it’s a little bit old-fashioned and this is why I’m not going to label it myself.
“I’ve had girlfriends that I’ve loved, in amazing periods of my life, but I’ve also had boyfriends.”
“I want you to know that whether I decide to be with a girl next or be with a guy next it’s because I love them.”
However, he might as well have been speaking Minion when he said he didn’t want any labels, given pretty much every headline.
Apparently, releasing a two-and-a-half minute video about how you don’t like your sexuality being labelled is a sure-fire way to get your sexuality labelled.
Pop singer Miley Cyrus experienced similar treatment last year, after she opened up about her fluid gender and sexuality in an interview.
She said: “There are times in my life where I’ve had boyfriends or girlfriends.
“I’m not hiding my sexuality. For me, I don’t want to label myself as anything.
“We love putting people in categories, but what I like sexually isn’t going to label me as a person.”
Following her comments, a ton of media outlets declared her ‘bisexual’.
