A new video game will give players the chance to play as canonical gay superheroes for the first time.
Wiccan and Hulkling – the popular gay couple and core members of the Young Avengers – are playable characters in the latest addition of Lego Marvel Avengers.
The characters feature among hundreds of unlockable Marvel heroes in the new game – in which they can be discovered together in a cave as part of the open world Manhattan area.
Unfortunately, their relationship is not made clear during gameplay, however fans are still delighted to see the popular gay pair pop up in the game.
This is not the first game to feature a same sex option, storyline or character.
Last year, Mortal Kombat X introduced their first gay playable character to much fanfare.
Bioware’s Mass Effect series charts the futuristic adventures of Systems Alliance Commander Shepard as he or she, depending on the player’s preference, tries to defeat a race of hostile machines.
The series has been praised for featuring a number of gay storylines, including the option to have gay sex in Mass Effect 3.
A lesbian love scene was included in the first game of the series but there was no option for male characters to pursue same-sex relationships.
In 2012, Star Wars: The Old Republic, a online role-playing game based in the Star Wars universe and developed by Bioware, came under fire from the Family Research Council for its plans to include a gay storyline.
