Anti-gay Republican Ted Cruz really loves singing show tunes
Ted Cruz is one of the most actively anti-LGBT candidates running for President… but that doesn’t stop him loving showtunes.
A militant opponent of gay rights, Cruz is one of six Republican candidates to have backed a new ‘religious freedom’ law which would allow religious people to discriminate against married gay couples – while he also plans to void same-sex marriage entirely.
Cruz branded actress Ellen Page a “liberal fascist” when she confronted him about his stance – and also faces tough questions about his links with ‘death to gays’ pastor Kevin Swanson.
Cruz shared a stage with Swanson at a religious rally a few months ago, where the pastor praised Biblical teachings calling for gays to be stoned to death – and Cruz has ducked calls to condemn him ever since.
Given his extreme stances on LGBT rights, an interesting snippet about Cruz’ personal life caused giggles this month – when it was revealed that Cruz is a massive fan of singing show tunes.
According to the New York Times, his wife Heidi Cruz recalled: “He’ll call me and just sing me a Broadway tune.
[It can happen] right before one of these debates or in a stressful moment in a state.”
She added: “He never ceases to defuse a stressful moment with a moment of levity.”
However, sometimes he can take his obsession a bit far – by bothering his wife at inconvinient times.
She said: “[I answer the phone and] I’m thinking, ‘I’m on a finance call right now, do you really need to be doing this?”
A spokesperson for the Cruz campaign is yet to clarify which he’d love most out of Cabaret, Kinky Boots, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Jimmy Kimmel joked: “Make no mistake, he still believes that marriage is a sacred union between one guy and one doll.”
