Equalities minister hits back after Will Young claims she ‘doesn’t give a s**t’ about gay kids
Will Young has claimed that Education Secretary Nicky Morgan “doesn’t give a s**t” about gay students being bullied.
The singer, who is a frequently outspoken critic of the government, made the comments over the weekend during a discussion of homophobia in education – attacking Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan.
He said: “It honestly breaks my heart there’s going to be more and more generations of young LGBT people who are going to have a lack of nurture and have this internalised shame, which can be changed within the education system.
“63 percent of secondary teachers don’t think that it’s a problem that someone is using gay in a derogatory sense – and yet in 2012, a study of 1000 young LGBT people found that 98 percent found it distressing.
“There’s a mismatch – and I don’t see the Education Secretary, whom I’m not a huge fan of at all… I don’t see her addressing this at all.
“The only conclusion I can draw is, she doesn’t give a s**t about it. I will picket outside the Department of Education until she f**king gives me some answers.”
The Education Secretary announced a £2 million fund to tackle homophobic bullying in 2014 – and sources close to the minister hit out at Mr Young for his comments.
A source close to the minister said: “Will Young should focus on reviving his pop career instead of doing down those in Government who are actually making a difference.
“It’s very sad that he’s using the gay community as a way of getting back in the headlines.”
