Police officer investigated for comparing Beyonce’s Superbowl dancers to the KKK
A police officer from Detroit is to be investigated for comparing Beyoncé’s Superbowl halftime dancers to the Ku Klux Klan.
The post, which was reported to the Detroit internal investigation team by a number of fellow employees.
It contained a photo of the dancers, and below, a picture of KKK members in white hoods.
The caption read: “If the dance troupe at the top is okay for this year’s half-time show, then the one at a bottom should be okay for next year, right?”
The uniforms of the dancers from Beyoncé’s Superbowl show have been compared to the Black Pather Party members’ outfits.
Detroit Police Department Chief of Police James Craig said: “I received calls indirect and direct from employees throughout the organization troubled by it.
“Certainly this does not and shouldn’t represent our police officers.”
The post has now been deleted, and a retraction added, but not before an investigation has been started.
“We work in a city that’s certainly well over 80 percent African-American and to post something that has to do with a hate group like the Ku Klux Klan is problematic,” Craig continued.
The performance has been hailed by many as a political statement, as she paid tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement, and the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
However some have taken umbrage at the performance, including former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, who called it “outrageous.”
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clark also denounced the performance, saying: “Would it be acceptable if a white band came out in hoods and white sheets in the same sort of fashion?” he asked.
“We would be appalled and outraged. The Black Panthers are a subversive hate group in America. I think she could have done a better job.”
The KKK last year distributed leaflets in Florida urging people to “support gay bashing” against “disgusting and inhuman” gay men.
The leaflets appear to have been issued by a group identifying itself as the ‘Loyal White Knights of the KKK’.
The KKK recently distributed the same leaflets in Louisiana – calling for people to help “stop AIDS” by slaughtering gays.
Despite the leaflets, other chapters of the KKK insist they’re perfectly welcoming to gay members.
